Following on from successful events held annually since 2021, we are pleased to announce the call for presentations and posters for the IEA Mine Water Geothermal Energy Symposium 2026.
Two days, 29th and 30th April, at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Arts in Newcastle, UK, a building heated by mine water via the Gateshead Heat Network. There will also be the option to join and present online.
The event is co-organised by the British Geological Survey, the Mining Remediation Authority, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) and IEA Geothermal.
CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
We welcome oral presentations (10-12 minutes in length) covering all aspects of mine water geothermal energy, with a focus on mine water heating, cooling and storage schemes worldwide, including:
Case studies of mine water heating, cooling and thermal storage
New schemes.
Progress updates – feasibility, investigation and operational.
Regulation and policy.
Solutions to the challenges of mine water geothermal scheme
Research and innovation (e.g. hydrogeological and heat flow modelling, geochemistry, etc.).
New techniques and products.
We also welcome proposals for nano-presentations (5 minutes in length) and posters.
Abstract Submission: Submit your proposal presentation including title, authors, affiliations and preferred presentation type (oral, nano or poster; and in person or online). The abstract length (not including title, authors and affiliations) should be between 150 and 250 words.
Deadline: 4 pm UK (BST) Friday 20th February 2026.
We welcome initial expressions of interest before that date, especially from international presenters who can share their experience in mine water geothermal from around the world. Please contact MineWaterThermal_IEA@bgs.ac.uk.

REGISTRATION
Registration will open in early March 2026 once the programme is drafted.
For in person attendees, there will be an enrolment fee as a contribution to lunch, refreshment and venue costs. For the field trip there will be a small fee to cover coach travel.
Online attendance will be free.
