New Zealand’s geothermal development relies on an assessed geothermal-power resource potential, which is 4 GWe (or 30 TWh/yr) from conventional convecting geothermal systems. These systems are hosted at depths of up to 4 km, mostly within the Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ). The deeper, hotter, and yet to be explored roots (3.5 – 6km) of this zone have been provisionally assessed by Bromley et al (2024) at ~3.5 GWe of additional potential.
The operational geothermal capacity as of the end of 2023 was 1243 MW, with annual generation of 8700 GWh. Annual direct use amounted to some 10 PJ, although it is noted that high accuracy direct use data is lacking.
