Geothermal Gas Management Workshop

  • Calgary Telus Convention Centre 136 8 Avenue Southeast Calgary, AB, T2G 5J2 Canada (map)

This workshop will be run in Calgary Canada at the Calgary Telus Convention Centre in the afternoon of the 7th June 2026 immediately ahead of the 2026 World Geothermal Congress opening reception.

The International Energy Agency Geothermal TCP provides for international collaboration and networking among nations, industries and industry organisations on geothermal energy and geothermal resources. It operates under the auspice of the International Energy Agency Technology Collaboration Programme.

A Geothermal Gas Management Task has been formed within IEA Geothermal. This multinational initiative aims to develop international guidelines for reporting geothermal gas emissions, and is fostering knowledge exchange on geothermal gas management and innovation advancing the sustainable utilization of geothermal energy by developing and implementing innovative gas management practices that minimize environmental impact and enhance global energy security.

Through this work, the initiative further aims to be the leading global consortium in geothermal gas management, setting international standards and fostering geothermal sector collaboration.

Drawing upon international experiences in gas management projects across participating countries, this initiative seeks to deepen international collaboration, drive innovation, and contribute to sustainable energy practices. The task is addressing natural variability of geothermal gas emissions, reviewing existing legal and policy structures, and exploring technical applications.

The ultimate goal is to develop a methodology for estimating the natural emissions, facilitating future adaptations that enables and facilitates a transitional change from emissions to innovative solutions.

A global catalogue is being compiled that surveys surface measurements of geothermal gas emissions across different geological settings as well as with change due to geothermal utilisation. The first version of the catalogue will be presented at the WGC in Calgary in June 2026.

This workshop is open to all stakeholders in the geothermal field and will dive into the focus areas of the Geothermal Gas Management Task.

The workshop will be in person only - there is no video option. We look forward to seeing you at the workshop.
